Received free, but not worth the time to read it.Revised: Okay, I spent some time to read a few more pages and still think it's a waste of time. Someone's idea of piecing together "evidence" of what they want to be true. Rather like a fake news site.

Do not buy version from publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. the title is still the same, but content is the watered down version of the original. in this free country US of America with democracy and freedom of speech pride, a religious book has been modified to not "offend" a group of people with hard TRUTH. we no longer have freedom.

This book was not written by Ellen G. White. If you have read any of her books you will see a marked difference in writing style. It is obvious that the publisher has set out to deceive others on the origin of this book. It contains the exact number of chapters as the original, but on closer review you will see the chapter titles are all different. After reading the first two chapters of this book, I found numerous errors that are in direct conflict to the Bible and Ellen G. White's real book. If you want the real deal, purchase this book published by Pacific Press Publishing Association.

Powerful read. We went to Maui on our Anniversary and the weather wasn't the best, so I read to my wife the first twenty (20) chapters! It provoked a lot of conversation and we both felt blessed by the experience. It was one of the most profitable and growing vacations we have had.

This book is about a spiritual controversy between good and evil from the time Lucifer because very proud down to the time went there will be no more sin and evil in the universe. The history had been taken place but on a spiritual level. I would recommend everyone to read this book, you will be spiritually blessed!

this is a heavily abridged version . it cannot be trusted . find an unabridged version because it is a book that will bless you

Very timely and awesome condition! The word of God is so beautifully presented from here! ... This is my second favorite book, behind the Bible. The things written in this book are Prophetic!.. I've never seen history compliment Bible Prophecy "so precisely" & "exactly".If you desire to know Matthew24..and Daniel and Revelation, ...you have to read this book!(Remember, the Scruptures say "do not despise prophesyings"...& again, know "whom the Lord chastises He Loves". ..... Christianity has Lived and forgotten it's heritage. Many Churches have "fallen". But, many people are still seeking for the truth! If you want to see the Biblical requirements of finding an healthy Church, read Revelation14 & see what Bible Prophecy says.. AND READ THIS BOOK!! !May the Lord bless you and keep you!(Remember: the secret for God's people to be one according to John17...is in this book. The heart of John17 is .. John17:17"Sanctify them by Your truth, Your word is truth."We must be sanctified by the Lord, and brought by the Spirit in unity.. by HIS' TRUTH. ..not mine, not yours. It says "THY WORD is truth".So Pick-up your Bibles with this book, and get ready to find some good rebukes to many Christian Churches of today... that need the Bible.**THIS BOOK CALLED "THE GREAT CONTROVERSY" WILL THOROUGHLY LIFT UP "JESUS CHRIST" AND "THE WORD OF GOD" AGAIN & AGAIN !**

You cannot get a better understanding of the Great Conflict... Controversy between Good (God) and evil (satan) and how we are repeating the history of the Israelites. This books is one of the most comprehensive, well written, and based on bible truth that you will ever read. It has history, it has terror, but most of all it has Hope, "For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son, that who so ever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life". I have studied this book 3 times and I am on my 4th! I cannot get enough of it and the more I read and study it the more I understand all that is written and the prophesies for our time!

Ellen White exposes the man of sin the papacy foretold in prophecy. She starts the book with the fall of temple of Jerusalem and the persecution of early christians whom witnessed for christ, She goes on to talk about The church of rome beginning to establish the supremacy of the little horn spoken by Daniel. The papacy was recognize as the Antichrist by the protestant reformers but todays protestant churches have been infiltrated and are now ready to join the papal power as foretold in prophecy.

Any recovery book written by Allen Berger is a must have. The books are not thick, physically, but it is very good, 'thick' writing. Every page is packed with good info, not a lot of fluff. It teaches me a new form of thinking. This is my 2nd book of his and I WILL be getting the other two. I can honestly say that these are my favorite recovery books.

I really like this book. Good solid information for those who actively engage in their recovery. I use this book in group discussions and mentoring as well as continuing to progress personally. The best thing about this book and the one that preceded it, is that it has great information for just being a better version of you. It can still help create a solid foundation for personal growth even outside the box of addiction.

I’m a mental health counselor/substance abuse counselor and have set up a library for my clients to read. They love the books and are constantly soaking in information to assist them with recovery.

Dr. Berger uses his long experience as a practicing therapist to integrate recovery theory (Wilson, Larsen, Tiebout) with important research in psychology (Milgram, Frankl, Satir), to illustrate key concepts on how to maintain and strengthen emotional sobriety.Although Dr.Berger’s approach is consistent with a 12 Step approach, he is not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom discussed in the rooms of recovery. Indeed, some of his ideas are so original and thought-provoking that I found myself pondering (and agreeing with) key points days after finishing the book.Although the book addresses issues in recovery, it would also be of interest to a broader audience. His writing style is clear and direct. He uses stories and patient narratives to illustrate key concepts, so his points are easy to understand even to readers not in the recovery community. In fact, I have purchased and given this book to friends, and received very positive feedback. It seems Dr. Berger’s approach is effective not only to people in recovery, but also, to all of us who suffer from the human condition.

This goes beyond basic sobriety and starts to uncover challenges we face in life as recovering people. We don't recover emotionally just because we are sober, and this book helps you see how that can be recovered too.

Provides much food for thought in how I can grow and thrive in my recovery journey. Takes the reader from physical sobriety to emotional sobriety

I like the book. Easy to read and very practical approach.

I really got very little out of this book. Had high expectations. Cannot really put my finger on it but I think the problem was there was not much practical instruction and examples on how to write code. Plus, it jumped between ADO and DBO and did not provide examples of how to write both for a given topic. As an ADO beginner that was disappointed. There is a dearth of books on this topic. Was hoping it would be more of a step-by-step on how to connect from Excel to Access with examples of how to write various queries based on different criteria, etc.

Helpful code examples. I found this invaluable, particularly for examples that showed how to iterate over multiple workbooks. The appendices were useful as well, clearly written, and not just a dumping ground for voluminous material.I would have liked to see some material on common run time errors that arise in this type of work. The example on data driven formatting was a thing of beauty, one that I think I will mine frequently.

"Integrating Excel and Access" covers the topic spelled out in the book's title...the integration of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access. While this may appear to be a niche topical area, I found such integration to be important, especially when working with large and complex data sets using non-enterprise class tools. The book does a good job covering the important area of the object models...for both Excel and Access. Utilizing and referencing object models across these two applications can prove to be a critical task when automating the integration of Access and Excel.I used this book for the specific purpose of automating Excel from Access and vice-versa...thus my focus on object models. As such, I did not focus a great deal on the rest of the book's content. This is the best reference I have come across related to the automation of Microsoft Excel from Microsoft Access and vice versa.

This ones a real keeper. As a person who is both a Hobbyist Programmer, who is sometimes called upon to bring those skills into work, I have been searching for this book for some time, it very elegantly describes how to combine the best aspects of Access, It's GUI and report Tools, and Excel - Its ease of use and familiarity to many more users (in my experiance.)It is of course an O'Reilly book, so its not for Dummys; but if you are at all comfortable with VBA you should have no problems with this book. Mega Props on a great book. BB.

I have spent the past ten years making my living developing integrated & automated financial systems using Excel, Access, and VBA for accounting and finance departments. That said, I literally have dozens of Excel, Access, and VBA books on my bookshelf. This is the only book that I have ever seen that integrates Excel and Access. It of course uses VBA to accomplish much of this. Why it has taken so long for someone to put the pieces together in one book I am not sure. What I am sure of is how useful this book is. If you use Excel and Access this book is a must. This should be your primary reference for integrating and automating Excel and Access. You will learn better ways to do what you are already doing. You will also learn ways to do things that you never knew were possible. As a result, your applications will be more efficient, more powerful, more accurate, more reliable, and finally, you will be a better programmer/developer.My work as a consultant puts me in a position to help others learn new ways to use Excel, Access, and VBA on a daily basis. When I show users what is possible, things that are covered in this book, they are not only impressed, they are amazed. They now do things that they never dreamed possible.Integrating the two object models using VBA allows you to fully automate your applications/models. You can now do it minutes, if not seconds, what used to take you hours or days. You remove the possibility of the user making errors because the user is no longer manually manipulating the data (copying, pasting, etc.) You are not changing formulas, expressions, or criteria. You are allowing the computer to do all of that for you. This book, combined with advanced VBA makes true automation possible.Even if you only desire to be an intermediate user, this book will make using Excel data in Access so much easier. It will of course also make it easier for you to get data from Access into Excel, and I am not talking about copying the results from a select query into an Excel worksheet. I am talking about using either the ODBC connection, or using SQL in VBA, to filter the data coming out of Access into Excel. As such, you get only the records that you want, with the click of a button. In a nutshell, this book is a must for anyone that uses Excel and Access for a common task. I have read thru this book twice already, and it is my number one reference book. Once you open this book, you too will be asking, why it has taken so long for someone to put using the two programs together in one book.Christopher T. FennellMicrosoft Office Application Developer

Great book, teaches everything about integration of MS Excel and MS Access, using by the way Object Oriented Programming concepts.

It has also shown easier methods to build tools than some of what I have done in the past.It is perfectly matched to what I needed for a current tool I am writing.I definitely recommend this book for beginners and intermediates also if you have significant experience you may not find it helpful.

This is great if you work with VBA inside of MS Office. Nice examples & code.

Awful! Nothing happened throughout 20 stories. Imagine listening to many distant aunts or a few effeminate uncles with deep grudges and endless "stream of consciousness" voices: shaggy dog stories with no purpose and too much info. This book has no sense of achievement, except the judges voted for another year of the women. A typical accomplishment in these stories is a female author describing how some guy talks compassionately with his son while his wife listens and *cleans!* One of the "stories" is really just an old lady describing details of three different houses she lived in. Of one she says, "I can't believe I lived there." Readers won't either. O. Henry told stories that were zippy and ironic, so it's sad when his award becomes a poetry prize for boring-character driven plots and social causes. One of the judges said, "In 12,000 words [the first chapter] manages to include all the large, small, secret, shameful, silly, gorgeous, and terrible parts of life." Is that what you want from a 40-page story? I prefer 10 pages with at least one memorable thing. This book helps you sympathize with those who want to clean the swamp and make things happen again. The 2010 edition I recently re-read was good. If I had time for literary experiences, I wouldn't want them in a short story anthology.

but not as many good vs bad stories as in some past years. I really didn't care for The Tomb of Wrestling which was selected by two of the jurors as their favorite. For me it was way too long and included much irrelevant side-information almost like the author were practicing for writing a novel. My favorite in this collection was Queen Elizabeth by Brad FelveralsoHow We Eat by Lara VapnyarAn Amount of Discretion by Lauren AlwanWhy Were They Throwing Bricks by Jenny ZhangNayla by Youmna ChlalaandCounterblast by Marjorie CelonWorth the Read as Always!

One of the finer collection of short stories I have read in some time. Recommended read. Interestingly sequenced. Exceptionally written.

Books arrived as promised. (Haven't read the stories yet!) I am in a Short Story Discussion club (like a book club, but we discuss one short story at a time.)

This series is new to me, but I will buy each new volume. Great stories that capture the imagination.

A wonderful collection of stories. Some are slower than the rest but all of them engage the reader. It seems they’re all centered around humans and how messy our lives really are. Few clean breaks can be found and stories rarely end where you think they will.

These O. Henry Prize story collections are great for discovering new writers; I often pick up books by the writers whose stories I particularly liked. It's always a worthwhile read, though with each year, my enjoyment varies depending on how my taste lines up with the jurors'.The only way I know to review and rate these collections is by the number of stories that left a strong impression on me. The 2018 edition had five stories that wowed me -- about on par with other editions -- and nearly all the stories were worthwhile. Some high points for me: Jo Ann Beard's “The Tomb of Wrestling,” a favorite of two of the jurors, in which a home invasion sparks recollections from a woman's past; Michael Parker's “Stop ‘n’ Go,” a brief but bracing piece that follows the frank reminiscences of a World War II vet; Mark Jude Poirier's “How We Eat” (perhaps the most memorable story for me) -- two siblings help their mother scrounge for money for lunch while trying to avoid her anger; Michael Powers' “More or Less Like a Man,” in which a man, hoping to avoid a conversation with a stranger on an airplane, becomes drawn to her story; Jo Lloyd's “The Earth, Thy Great Exchequer, Ready Lies,” an evocative story of empire building that takes an unexpected turn. One caveat: Three stories, though well-written and engaging, were from the "Life is Miserable" school of fiction writing. As I get older, I appreciate these types of stories less and less.I liked that only two of the stories are from the New Yorker. Other collections of prize-winning stories have had as many as a quarter of the stories from the NYer, so if you are a subscriber, you've already read 1/4 of the book.

This collection is guaranteed to be good, and I was thrilled when I received a review copy, thanks to Net Galley and Doubleday. Those that enjoy strong fiction should buy it and read it, even if you have to pay full jacket price. This year’s edition holds 20 prize winning stories along with a bit of judging commentary at the end. This book is now for sale. The first story in any short story collection is bound to be good, and so I knew that Joanne Beard’s Tin House would be strong, and it is, in a dark, surreal way. I wouldn’t read it at bedtime lest it enter my dreams, but it’s memorable, original, and gritty. I also enjoy Brad Felver’s Queen Elizabeth, and Past Perfect Continuous, by Dounia Choukri. My favorite of all of them, the one that made me laugh out loud, is Why Were They Throwing Bricks, by Jenny Zhang, a story that features a cagey, manipulative Chinese grandmother and the grandchildren whose lives she enters, leaves and reenters. Zhang appears to have mostly published poetry up to this point, but I hope she writes more fiction, because I want to read it.The only aspect of any short story that I don’t enjoy is the open-ended sort that conclude with no real resolution. This screamingly frustrating inclination is minimal here, showing at the ends of a just a couple of the featured stories.Short stories are terrific to leave, once you’ve finished them, in your guest room, because people that stay with you briefly can read a story or more without the frustration of having to either leave an incomplete novel behind or beg to borrow it, not knowing when they can return it. If you need an excuse to get this excellent collection for yourself, there it is.Highly recommended.

Product is advertised as 10th edition, but is actually ninth edition. Product is shipped in a plastic wrap without any sort of binder. The cover page has the Tenth Edition cover identical to the image, however the second page is the cover of the Ninth Edition and the following contents are that of the Ninth edition, not the Tenth.

Needed this textbook for a C programming class. The book does a good job of providing code examples, and introducing programming concepts and syntax. It also introduces many common programming mistakes and coding best practices I wish they included an appendix with code solutions to help with some of the more difficult exercises. Also some of the end of chapter exercises are worded somewhat vaguely

What is the deal with these other people leaving reviews about how well the book was packaged or shipped? Yikes.Disclaimer: I haven't finished the book yet, I'm through 7 chapters. I figured I'd leave this review while I remembered to do so.Prior to this book I had next to 0 programming experience. The book does a great job of guiding the reader through the basics. The book typically gives an explanation, shows a very simple example, adds a few layers of information, shows a slightly more complex example, and continues this through the chapter. The chapters are divided up into good chunks of information. Chapter 5 on functions probably should have been subdivided, it felt like it dragged on and on and contained obnoxiously large amounts of information. For the most part the book doesn't assume you know too much, and gives plenty of background information before diving in. There have been a few times where I felt like it came up short in certain areas and didn't give a fair explanation prior, but these are few and far between. One of my favorite things about this book are the examples at the end of the chapter. They start out simple and get more challenging, and there are an abundant amount of examples. If you purchased a new book you get an access code which provides additional resources online, including the sample code throughout the chapter for you to easily compile and play with as well as answers to certain problems at the end of the chapter. Here's where one of my biggest problems with the book comes. The online resources provided with a new book only contain answers to the end-of-chapter problems for chapters 1, 2, and then 10+. What in the hell happened to solutions for chapters 3 through 9? Here's why the book gets 4 stars. In my opinion chapters 2 through 8 are the meat and potatoes of the book. Selection(if, if...else), sequence and repetition(loops) are covered in these chapters. Functions (and prototypes) are covered in these chapters. These are the basic building blocks and extremely important. So I've spent a ton of time working through the end-of-chapter problems and it sucks that the solutions for chapters 3 through 9 aren't there. In some cases I'm stumped by the problem, in other cases I've come to a solution and I'd like to compare my methodology (a new programmer) to theirs (an experienced programmer).

I was required to purchase this book for a C++ programming class. The book arrived on time and in good condition, with no errors in printing. However reading through it is one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to do, and I've been through some difficult courses. They constantly introduce new terms, then never fully define them, and continue to use them throughout the book expecting you to catch on. Then they use these underdefined terms to not fully define future terms, creating a mess of bizarre language that I can't seem to understand.I read through the code examples and can understand most of it with moderate ease, and then I try to read through their explanations of it and suddenly can't comprehend a thing. As a beginner, I feel this book is lacking. It's definitely not something you can use as a sole explainer of how to program.I would recommend purchasing a different book if possible.

I often recommend Deitel & Deitel's *C++ How to Program* to anyone that asks me for the best book to learn C++. After reading several Deitel books, I recognize their familiar and highly refined "formula" for teaching fundamental topics. While this book is relatively expensive, if you're having trouble understanding pointers, then Chapter 8 - Pointers will feel like money well-spent.

This book has become a reference for me in my own search for answers. What I didn't like about the book is that it felt to me that Mr. Barrow advances many of the same agendas of modern mainstream scientific materialism. But, if one can discriminate somewhat against the latter, the book is chock full of simply explained technical concepts. And, to the degree that Mr. Barrow departs from the mainstream messianic world view of scientific materialism, he does an excellent job of asking some tough questions that are less than flattering to mainstream Science and he proposes some anxious doubts as to humanities ability to overcome some of the "intractable" problems that currently plague the human species. In sum, an educational, informative, and provocative script on the state of modern science and its limits. Lastly I found myself in awe of Mr. Barrows comprehensive awareness of so many of the interdisciplinary branches of science, and his extremely sharp insight and technical abilities with respect to modern science.

One of the very few books that I would always read several times. The book is a mind challenge of how the human mind will never wither and give in to machines. The ideas are fascinating and a good exercise for the mind.

Mr Barrow, as always, presents intriguing logical arguments, built upon an original (or at least unusual) view of basic principles.I dont agree with all his conclusions but it was an interesting and provoking read. However, the kindle ebook is awful. The font is ghastly, making some words unreadable (and my kindle touch wont allow font adjustment for this book - but it does for every other one I have!)References are not hyperlinked to the relevant appendix entry (standard on all books I thought?) which in a work that, at times, gets quite involved is a major pain. Diagrams are unintelligible in many cases thanks to the poor quality. Textual errors aboundGet the paperback.

This is an interesting book and presents some issues which were unfamiliar to me. I had heard of most of the arguments before but some were completely refreshing especially those concerning Goedel, the Arrow Impossibility theorem and Donald McKay. Like some of the other reviewers I found the book to be a little muddled in terms of making clear points in each chapter but overall it was good. I would have been interested if Barrow had looked at some other ways of looking at the world such as Goethean science, unlike Kant, which notes that it is possible to truly experience what is real, or the approach of intuition which Goedel himself notes "I don't see any reason why we should have less confidence in this kind of perception, ie mathematical intuition ..." or for that matter the logical approach first created by Spencer Brown in his "Laws of Form". There are times when much is assumed which of course is not unexpected since Barrow is a hard scientist who stays well within the expected bounds of science. It is good to see the text interspersed with humorous asides such as those of Douglas Adams and many others. As usual Barrow has done his research in the accepted areas very well being thorough and at times insightful. All in all a fascinating journey through the (normal) science of limits.

Is science fast coming to an end? Can we arrive at a so-called theory of everything? Are there limits to our abilities to discover the nature of reality? In trying to tackle such questions, Astronomer John D. Barrow invites readers to an intriguing journey which I understood as twofold. First, it promises to show how the notion of impossibility is far subtler than everyday language suggests and to demonstrate how fundamental are the limitations to science (in the broadest sense of human capability to discover and know things). To support this contention, he serves up a menu of what seems like disjointed readings into the limits of human endeavor as demonstrated in findings in different fields such as astronomy, mathematics, psychology, economics, and others. Each of these readings, which are sub-sections of chapters, is individually interesting and the book overall is not deeply technical, -- and thus remains accessible to the truly curious generalist reader. It covers some familiar basic ideas in different fields, which all depict the notions of limits and impossibility, whether in scientific discovery or in social decision-making. The topics range from the technical bounds to scientific experiments, such the speed of light and difficulties of producing the extremely high temperatures not found on earth which are needed to test our version of the forces of nature, to Arrow's impossibility theorem on the inability to generate a consistent ranking of social preferences based on an aggregation of ranking of individual preferences.Unfortunately, these sub-sections of chapters, while individually very interesting and clearly written, tend to conflate different ideas of impossibility rather than leading to a straightforward conclusion on the fundamental limitations of human endeavors of creation and discovery. The secondary thrust of the book is on the nature of reality itself. Barrow argues that the kind of limitations he enumerates defines the universe more powerfully than a list of what we think is possible. In fact, he contends that this ?impossible? nature of the universe is what itself allows the self-reflection consciousness of humans, a rather intriguing, if not entirely novel, proposition. My judgment on this book is a complex as the range of subjects the author attempts to cover. It is without doubt an intriguing set of propositions loosely connected with some related discussion on the history of scientific thought. I found the discussion of nineteenth century notions of impossibility very informative. However, the book may achieve its appeal by overstating its case (QUOTE the astronomers? desire to understand the structure of the universe is doomed merely to scratch the surface of the cosmological problem UNQUOTE) and resorting to fast and loose comparisons of paradoxes and limits which are well-known to practitioners in a number of different fields. Ultimately, the book gives a sense of having covered too much, and thus providing too little in any given area.I confess that notwithstanding these reservations, I enjoyed reading this somewhat unusual book. If you do have the stamina to complete this book, you might choose to do so in a non-linear fashion by working through the clear summaries of each chapter first, and then going through the chapters in your order of preference. If you manage to do all this, you are likely to enjoy another book on a different but related topic on the nature of the human mind entitled ?Figments of Reality? by Stewart and Cohen which I have also reviewed on this site.

Purchased for my 3 year old son after I'd purchased and used the Letters book (also by this company) - these books are great educational resources, are easy to use at a self-pace, and keep toddlers busy for awhile ;)PROS: bright big pictures of real things in the world, pages wipe clean after use, sturdy binding hardcover; many activities (including tracing numbers and names of numbers with space to write your own, counting objects/animals and recording, connect-the-dots in the back with numbers to make pictures, matching quantity of objects/animals to their corresponding number); covers numbers all the way up to 20; self-pacing and self-useable for a toddler; dry erase marker includedCONS: like many dry erase wipeable books, while durable, they do tend to wear down over time from all the wiping (this is especially true if you are using any chemicals to wipe them, which is not recommended)

Bought this for my preschoolers who are reluctant writers hoping it would be more engaging than a simple worksheet, and I was right! The pages are bright and colorful but the tracing and writing portion is simple and not overly complex. Also, using the chunkier dry erase marker is easier for little hands than a pencil or crayon. The 'pages' of the book are board so they don't bend or rip. I DO have difficulty erasing, I'm not sure if that is a result of the book or the marker, but a lysol wipe gets it off without damaging the pages. I liked this book so much, I bought two others, a letter one and another for my 6 year old about the United States.

We own several of these books (letters and words) and my son enjoys them. He is a lefty and has horrid handwriting so I wanted to expand the book offering to encourage him to practice more. I was disappointed with how small the numbers are in this book. I was hoping they would be about the size of those on the cover but inside the book they are about 1/4 that size. I'm not sure what age this book is aimed at... It's too simple for the average kindergartener but it would require that level of dexterity to write that small.

We love all the Priddy books. My daughter is working on her writing and these are great books although they are a pain to clean. The market is not the best quality and often leaves marks on the pages even after we use wet wipes to try and get them off

My son loves it!! We practice everyday!! I just bought washable dry-erase markers because the one that comes with it stains the hands too much but it does come out easily from the book though! It really motivates him to write and practice on his own! I only read him the instructions for the special exercises!!

My Grandson loves this book. I haven't had much success in holding his interest to practice his letters and numbers until this book arrived. He took right to it and didn't want to stop tracing the numbers. The dry erase pen is a nice size for his hands and allows him to hold the pen the proper way. I like the way there is a little cubby holder for the pen, so it is always ready. There are also various other tracing activities to do. Well worth the price of $6.24, such nice quality. Much nicer than the paper sheet tracing books because you can use it over and over by just erasing with a dry eraser, paper towel or cloth. I have now ordered the Letters book from Amazon, so he can dive into the letters more deeply.

The activities are cute, but the pages do not "wipe clean" easy with a damp cloth or name brand board eraser (dry or spray). They leave residue and have to be scrubbed off, even though it was less than 5 minutes after he was done that I cleaned it. They look quite dirty now after one use, which is very disappointing.

Overall, I was a little bit disappointed in this product. Based on the cover, I expected large numbers to trace, but the numbers inside were really very small. The activities were pretty easy, but the writing was more advanced. I can't imagine a developmental level that this book would be really good for, because by the time a child is ready to write letters and make small numbers, the activities are going to be boring for them. The pictures are bright and beautiful, and the wipe-off feature does work well.

When I first picked up Linux, there were no books. The readmes were thin and the available help was limited. That was then. Today, I am constantly bombarded by friends that say "You're into Linux, how do I..." And worse, at work, the developers are constantly coming to me to get help with basic administration tasks. I hand them Wale's book. This is the sort of book you want if:1) You have some Linux experience and want to take the next step, either to administer your own site or improve your job skills to move into professional administration.2) You are already an administrator of that "other" operating system and want to know what all the fuss is about.3) You are expanding your Linux administration skills beyond the basic start, stop, break, fix model. What this book will not help you with is setting up your X environment. Wale takes you in depth, but expects you to do it on the command line. The power of Linux is on the command line, so there is no "click here, click there" type instruction. You spend your time at the pound sign, where real administration is done. The new version covers the core stuff: DNS, Mail, Web services, backup, installation, and package management. But it doesn't stop there. New core services, like LDAP, Distributed File Systems, and Virtualization (KVM, Virtual Box and QEMU) are covered as well as installations via flash drives. The other thing that distinguishes the book is that it does not pick favorites. This is a book about LINUX administration, not Red Hat administration or Ubuntu administration. It is about Linux administration, and while Wale covers the subtle differences between them when there is a difference, it is about teaching the skills that an administrator needs to administer a Linux system, regardless of distribution, package management strategy, or GUI tool sets. This is a book for administrators, by administrators. No fluff about setting up your speakers, or how to connect your video camera. This is about building and running servers in data centres. If this is your job, or you want to make it your job, then this is your entry point. If you are already a skilled administrator, keep a copy on your shelf to loan out to those who need to learn more.

This is one of the better Linux Admin books out there. The author does a great job of giving the reader enough information for a vast number of Linux topics/tools. It is a beginner's book in the sense that for many subjects, there are tons of other resources you have to look into to really master or get a deep level of knowledge. The author makes a note of this and also suggests further reading. The person that gives this 1 star "Warning - The title is a lie." couldn't be more wrong about the book. The author explains from the very beginning that there are certain assumptions being made about the reader and even if these assumptions are wrong, the material in the book is still great for guiding a beginner level Linux admin. One of my favorite chapter is chapter 9 'The Linux Kernel'. I will def keep this book close by. If you have absolutely no idea what Linux is, an argument could be made for picking up a more introductory type of book.

For beginners, and for people who have only limited experience This book is best in the sense that it slowly makes you comfortable with Linux concepts without inhibiting - the author uses wit and makes it very readable and personal. It is not just a how-to book but why-so book too.

I've had several false starts getting into linux over the years. I think the more conversational tone the Author takes makes it easier to get through compared to some of the textbook-like tomes I've tried before. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it speaks more to a character deficiency on my part when a tech book lays out all the facts and instructions competently but I can't get through it because the writing is too dry. With books aimed at "beginners" who aren't true beginners (some existing experience with other operating systems is assumed) the right level of detail is difficult to balance. Too little and the reader won't fully understand the subject matter. Too much and he gets bogged down in low level details and has trouble seeing the big picture. I think the author (or editor?) does a good job of laying down a foundation of understanding without giving too much unnecessary information.

This is a solid resource for IT administrators or software developers getting their first exposure to Linux Server administration. The newest version of the book offers coverage of Amazon Web Services and Docker. I appreciated the author sharing helpful tips from his own experience to save reader's time. For example, in the installation chapter, he recommends placing a limit on the TMP directory size to avoid hacking attempts at filling up the server's drive. I had a misbehaving open source program that spammed my TMP directory with log files and partial downloads, and this tip saved me from having my server become unavailable because it couldn't perform any write actions.

Over 800 pages perfectly pitched for non-professional Linux enthusiasts (like myself). Covers distros, installation and the command line, networks, services, protocols, even virtual machines in enough depth to be really *useful* without totally overwhelming the reader. A meaty read; well done! Easily worth the price.

So far I like this guide better than any I have ever had. It is well indexed and the chapters are arranged very logically. The actual content I have not yet had time to absorb, but it seems to be written in a style easy to understand and accomplish tasks. A lot of these types of guides have a lot of unintelligible jargon to sort through, but this writer seems to have avoided that with clear and concise instructions. Thanks.
