This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. However, the prospective buyer should be informed that the illustrations in this Dover edition are NOT by the original illustrator, Harrison Cady. Instead, they are very crude redrawings by another artist, Pat Stewart. They convey very little of the charm of Harrison Cady's work. Some of the Dover reprints of Thornton Burgess books have original Harrison Cady drawings, but many are crude redrawings by other artists. The ones by Theo Kliros are not too bad, but the ones by Pat Stewart are disappointing. To get real Harrison Cady illustrations, you'll have to buy a used book. There were two sets of original Harrison Cady illustrations for this title:-- Published by Little, Brown, with 8 full-page color illustrations.-- Published by Grosset & Dunlap, with 4 full-page B&W illustratins. The B&W redrawings in this Dover edition are of 6 of the 8 Little, Brown color illustrations. On the other hand, the cover illustration is by Cady; it's the cover illustration for the Little, Brown first edition. However, the colors are much more saturated compared to the original, which obscures some detail.I'd recommend the Little, Brown edition. A good place to find one is AbeBooks dot com.If you're looking for old editions, the library binding version of the Grosset & Dunlap edition was titled "The Adventures of Bowser the Hound" (instead of just "Bowser the Hound").
We (mom and two kids) love the Thornton Burgess books and have read 8 or 10 of them aloud together, with several more already purchased and ready to go when we finish the current volume. We were discussing the books today and we all thought Bowser the Hound was our favorite so far. As with all the Thornton Burgess books, nature lessons and sensible life lessons are intertwined into an engaging story, and all the books interact with each other to build a charming and believable world. The author was a naturalist and the animal characters are doing the things those animals actually do, while learning lessons about things like pride, stubbornness, and helping others. Recommend +++
Took a long time to get here but these are my sons absolute favorite books! We have the entire adventures series.
classic tales
These Thornton Burgess books were my absolute favorites when I was a child, and my Mother and Dad read and re-read them to me many times.I am now a Grandfather, and I purchased several of these wonderful little books for my Grandchildren and they just love them!I highly recommend this series for inquisitive children from 3 years on up (I'm now 60 and I still get quite a kick out of reading them)!Mark B.Tucson, AZ
I loved this series when I was growing up and it really sparked a love of reading for me. The stories are engaging and the continuity between the stories made me want to read more. They also helped me appreciate nature and the outdoors. I bought them for my daughters hoping they will have the same experience as I did.
Although the language is slightly dated this is a good story to read to little ones at bedtime. Each of the 42 chapters are two pages in length or slightly less (which helps Mommy's or Daddy's throat). Old Man Coyote deliberately leads Bowser the Hound far away from Farmer Brown's farm and Bowser's home. Will Bowser ever find his way home? Will Blacky the Crow's tricks help Bowser get home? Will Reddy Fox get a good meal in the dead of winter when food is scarce? You'll have to read the book to find out! Happy reading.
My grandson loves these stories. The author really did know how to attract and keep children's attention with his story telling. I find myself interested right along with them. I highly recommend them for the 6 to 12 age group.
