Unfortunately, when I finished the book I really didn't know much more about Solomon than what I learned in Sunday School as a child. This is really a book that uses the text about Solomon as a springboard to talk about the importance of Jesus, the Church and the Christian life. I hoped it would take me deeper into the Hebrew background, language and rabbinic teaching. It does not. It might be good for a typical Bible study that focuses on application preaching, but it won't satisfy anyone looking for some real critical analysis. Of course, I don't believe the author intended it to be anything more than a cursory overview of Solomon as a way to speak about Christian living (and there's the obligatory "study guide" at the back which probably proves my point), but I've had enough sermons for a lifetime. What I want to know is the details--in detail. This is not the book for that.

He paints historical detail onto the canvas of his exposition. And he clearly presents the movements of Solomon's life through the book of 1 Kings - the good, the bad, and the ugly.The most important feature of this book is how the author weaves the gospel into the story of Solomon's life. The author's conclusion is a fitting end to this gospel-saturated exposition: "Praise God for Jesus Christ, the risen King, the true and righteous Solomon of our salvation! By the power of his resurrection, we will be able to serve God to the end of our days. And afterwards we will rise with Solomon and all the children of God, to offer our Savior an eternity of praise."

Well written, this book held my attention from beginning to end. The age of Solomon was one of glory, but Solomon was laying the foundations for its undoing from the beginning. Ryken's style is always enjoyable, and I found this book most rewarding. I highly recommend it.

Covering the life of King Solomon from his assuming the kingship of Israel to his death: his rise, his years of prosperity and plenitude and the beginning of the fall of the house of David, which was to become complete after Solomon's son, Rehoboam (whom the author describes as "foolish"), succeeded him according to the word of God revealed to Solomon. Philip Ryken (President of Wheaton College) not only recounts stories of the reign of the king in progressive order, but offers satisfying and interesting insights into each of them.Not only was King Solomon the richest man in the world, he was the wisest man in the world, so much so that the queen of Sheba, in a fascinating account, travelled 1,000 miles over the desert to learn for herself the nature and qualities of the king (she, obviously being an intelligent woman, had prepared many questions and riddles for Solomon). She was not disappointed, but remained in wonder and awe even after her departure (one theory is that Sheba was in modern-day Yemen).The opulence of the king's life is mind-boggling; gold galore and the finest woods which were used to construct the temple in Jerusalem and his home-compound nearby; thousands of horses and horsemen, 700 wives and 300 concubines (all treated with equal respect); a feast prepared everyday ranging from 14,000 to as many as 32,000 people. And that's just for starters!His kingdom extended from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and the border of Egypt. However, the author consistently points out that King Solomon is to be viewed as lesser than the one to come who was completely pure: Jesus.The one thing I would criticize is that the author makes it clear that he considers Christianity to be the world's superior religion and the Buddha is not to be honored as much as Christ regardless of the fact that approximately 350 million people are Buddhists and their religion is nurturing to them. This speaks of religious intolerance to this reader.The format of this book is a bit confusing as it seems to be directed to churchgoers and theological students, and the general reader may find this to be distracting. I refer to the brief sermons (or at least expository comments) that follow the narrative of each story instructing the reader how to incorporate the lessons learned from Solomon's decisions, both positive and negative, in his/her own life. There is also a Study Guide at the end of the book that would be mainly useful to bible study classes or students.The writer's style is easy and fluid. This book is an easy and entertaining way to learn, and gain valuable insights into, the story of King Solomon and his remarkable and, for the most part, peaceful reign.
