About the Author
Seth Leitman is currently President and Managing Member of The Green Living Guy which talks about organic, natural, and sustainable products for business and home use (from energy-efficient bulbs to electric vehicle conversion referrals). Previously, he worked for the New York State Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, where he helped develop, market, and manage electric and hybrid vehicle programs serving New York State and the New York metropolitan area. Bob Brant wrote the first edition of Build Your Own Electric Vehicle, published in 1993, and some might say he was ahead of his time in his passion to convert to electric. While there have obviously been updates and technological advances since that time, many of the concepts in that first book are still in use today. Bob grew up in New York City, got a BSEE, and worked on NASA projects such as Apollo, Lunar Excursion Module, and the Earth Resources Technology Satellite. He then went on to get an MSEE and MBA, and worked for a company that worked on the Lunar Rover. Bob was always fascinated with every electric vehicle breakthrough, was convinced of its personal and environmental benefits, and was curious why stronger steps had not been taken to make electric vehicles a reality.

About halfway through the book I wanted to stop reading because it became so repetitious, it was really beating me over the head with factoids about how good electric vehicles are, I know they are, that's why I bought the book, you don't need to sell me on the idea of electric cars anymore. You could have 1 chapter explaining the social, economic, environmental benefits of electric car ownership and then never say it again, ever, seriously:-)The Tesla stuff was all over the place too, consolidate that or use that as a fixed reference for the various topics like types of battery's, here's what Tesla uses, types of transmissions, here's what Tesla uses...I pushed through and was rewarded with the last half which was much more direct and explained actually building an electric vehicle. The AC vs DC information was well handled as well as how to handle the transmission in a electric conversion project, for those sections alone I would recommend this book.
The book appeared a great asset of information about EVs either new built or conversion. However the information is more general and if you want to get it more specific this book is not in much help. I personally was skimming the information and did not read it thoroughly, as about 95% of informaiton is very common taken from the Internet. Instead of drawings there are just pictures which are great, but they are not in much help.I consider this book more as a good motivator and some kind of starting point in aquiaring information for EVs enthusiasts. Definitely is will occupy the easy to reach place on my bookshelf and wouldn't be covered by dust. In general I would recommend it to all hobbyist and EV curious people.
I bought both "Build Your Own Electric Vehicle" and "The Electric Vehicle Conversion Handbook" at the same time. Both books are well done, and will help someone considering building an electric vehicle decide if the really want to proceed. Both spend a lot of time introducing the concepts involved, and "Build Your Own Electric Vehicle" has some advanced information.However, I was hoping for something a bit more detailed from both books. However, I realize it's hard to keep these books current on such a rapidly-changing topic. A couple of the companies referenced have since gone out of business.

Good book, but the typesetting left much to be desired. There are a number of potentially useful formulas that cannot be viewed without zooming in image viewer.
There is good information here, but it is buried in a lot of anecdotes and filler that appear to be about making the book bigger. If you want to find out what's possible, this book will help, but if you are looking for a nuts and bolts breakdown, there are better resources available that will get to the point a lot sooner.
I order this book for my son and he is very satisfied with it.
Lots and lots of good information. Really got the low down on building my own EV. Haven't done it yet and this is not the technical guide. Only nit is that the book is articles by the authors and there was little or no effort put into editing for book form.
