I am very very impressed by this book. I'm currently working on a video project for a course I am taking and I have to finish a number of shots with various motion graphics and effects. I'm familiar with After Effects, but certainly no master at it, so I wanted a book that focused on compositing and more advanced effects that the beginners training and books do not cover in sufficient depth. This book has come through for me big time! The thing I love about this book is that it talks about various topics and various approaches and tools within after effects you can use to solve those problems. It even talks about various suggestions for 3rd party plugins, in cases where the basic After Effects tools are lacking. It doesn't hold your hand, telling you what buttons to click, it assumes you know all that, or can figure it out. Topics in the book include keying, color correction, explosions, beam effects, smoke, fire, rotoscoping, and all kinds of other neat things. This one has definitely earned a permanent place on my bookshelf, and new status as my favorite After Effects books (and I have quite a few).

It was not expected quality

Tons of Tips and Tricks to truly understand the art of compositing. A definite buy for somebody interested in VFX or motion graphics.

To be fair to the author, it's probably a great book for those that were looking for what it provides. I was looking for more of a cookbook type of approach. In that regard, the chapter on expressions was perfect. The rest of the book, in my highly unqualified opinion, is more appropriate for people who know how to do these things but would benefit from rethinking the subtleties of their approach to improve their output.As I said, probably a great book for the right target market, which wasn't me!

The item came very quickly and the book is nothing but great, the problem was that the book came with some issues like scratches and dirty spots.

As a longtime digital artist relatively new to the After Effects arena and Compositing in general, I find this book to be an invaluable learning tool that I'm constantly referencing. It's very well written and manages to integrate both the artistic side and technical side of compositing and After Effects. It's not overly heavy on tutorials, which is nice, because those can be found anywhere online. Instead, the book explains by showing how and why using a certain tool or method is the optimal approach. There's often sidebars that explain the technical reasons as well.Part of what I like most about the book is the tone of the author, Mark Christiansen. He's got a sharp wit, that's evident in his writing style and I caught myself laughing a few times which I can't say has ever happened to me while reading a book on software/design training. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to beef up their After Effects skills and more specifically, those who want to learn compositing as an art form.

Mark does it again with his new book for CS4 packing a large amount of his great visual effects knowledge into this new edition. The forward by Stu Maschwitz alone is funny to " Who Brings the Sex" about explaining the " money shots " visual effects artists are expected to produce daily Backing this up the books has some scripting guru's like Jeff Amsol and Dan Ebberts to get your Java/Expression fix. This is definitely the book for the serious compositor using After Effects with real world examples and solutions from a real world visual effects artists/supervisor you can not go wrong with taking your time with this book.The Chapters I found most helpful cover topics of 32bit HDR compositing and its complex underpinnings , the always tedious Rotoscoping and Paint and the section on Creative Explorations(Light,Climate and Pyro).Mark also happens to be a professor at FXPHD.com where you can get even more of his compositing teachings. A+++ must have for your bookshelf.

I also own the CS3 book by the same author.Highly recommended. Lots of detailed information to be found, both for After Effects and VFX/Compositing in general.I could probably be categorized as an intermediate user and the book seems to be at the perfect level for me. There are probably better books for an absolute beginner, but everyone else will find a reason to keep it around, even the seasoned pros.

I've read a lot of books on mental toughness lately. First off, most of them are written for athletes, and though I hit the gym twice a day every day, I'm not technically an athlete. Second, most books on leadership don't give you a lot of detail. Divine doesn't write in platitudes and ideals. He delivers actionable information.The challenge: there are lots of acronyms to memorize in this book. Divine hails from the US Armed Forces (Navy SEAL Commander, Retired), so the love of TLAs is in high effect. But in the end, like all good things, you learn a bit easier because you remember them longer (DIRECT and PROP and SMACC are just things I do now every day).The trick: there's a trick to this book. I almost don't want to tell you. He wants your mind and spirit to work just as hard as anything else. There's tons in here on meditation and on what can typically be considered spirituality. Only, it's written with far less crystals and fussy foo foo language and it's written like the kind of stuff you need to get your brain and soul as tight as your body for the work ahead.The best: Divine gives you so many ways to take action, with a really good progression around it, that this book will DEFINITELY improve your mindset, your efforts, your intentions, and your output.If you do the work. But then, that's the same with anything.I've read a LOT of books on the subject matter covered by Mark Divine in this book but this one stands out above the others. Just as a point of fact, I've purchased the book three times so far, and will likely give out more to people over time. It's a must read. I've been blathering about it far too much.Get on this.

Commander Divine's tools that he developed in his life to succeed at elite levels at all times, including under intense pressure, have proven very useful to me in my life. I have given many copies of this book to others, both at work and in my personal life. I highly recommend this book and suggest that readers really try what he suggests, because it does work.As an example, I have challenged a number of people at work to try the morning 'ritual' for two weeks and have not once had someone not say it made a big impact on their day. Great stuff.

Really enjoyed it. Mark Divine is obviously a master of physical ability and mental control, but what impressed me the most is his focus on balance and promoting being well-rounded. This is not a book about pushing your way through life; but guiding your own path and in relation to others, dealing with your past and emotional s*!t, realizing how much more you are capable of than you realize, and includes the spiritual side too. Recommended especially for those of you who are looking to find direction and motivation in their lives.

Don't think for a minute this book is only about Navy SEALS. It is about a way of thinking, how to think effectively and achieve your goals in a focused and determined manner, build intuition, deal with adversity and do it all with much less stress. What is taught applies to SEALS, executives, athletes, and well everyone who wants to do more than just accept what life throws your way. Coach Divine teaches you how to take back control of your life and drive it rather than just be a passenger. I've read plenty of self-help books and this is seriously a cut above. Throw the rest out, they are now obsolete. I'm getting everyone on my team at work a copy of this book.

This book is full of very practical applications of leadership that incorporate physical, spiritual, emotional, and physical dimensions. For me, I really enjoyed learning about personal and organizational leadership using Navy Seals lingo and examples but I could see how for some that might be challenging.All said and done I'm impressed with this book and I believe this a good read along with other books that talk about business, leadership, fitness, willpower, etc.

I have read tons and tons of self-help books and this is by far one of the best. Aside from Richard Mackowicz's "Unleash The Warrior Within" which is also written by fellow seal Mack, this is one of the best personal development books you can spend money on.I strongly suggest anyone looking to accomplish their goals, beat depression, or any type of life challenge give this book a try! The chapter on creating a Mind Gym for visualization and goal setting alone is worth the price of admission. I can't think of another tool in my arsenal now that has helped me more then that one.Not to mention all of the other gems sprinkled throughout the book. Mark is no nonsense and no joke, but never talks down to his audience. He relates to you and helps guide you the way he was guided himself.Get this book if you are trying to accomplish goals and are experiencing setbacks. You will not be disappointed!

Great book! Really got me inspired to take action. Great tools for life! I will be highly recommending this book to a lottt of people! I love that it has a lot of calls to action, it gets you into actually putting the books theories to work WHILE you're reading. It is written in a way that it can apply to any "type" of person from a stay at home mom, to a business entrepreneur or aspiring navy seal. Its not all "fru fru" like some self help type books. I think my husband would actually read this and not be at risk of loosing his eyes as they roll in the back of his head :)

I had purchased 'So, You Want to Be a Physician' for my child when she started applying to medical schools. She was successful in getting admission to medical school with the material and guidance given in the book. Pre-medical students carry an inordinate amount of academic load to meet the medschool course prerequisites. The extra curricular activities place even greater demand on their time. The application process itself can be the proverbial 'last straw that breaks the camel's back.' The book offers focused, relevant information thus making it easier for the students to separate the essentials from nice-to-have and effectively manage the application process.

As a college freshman I recommend this book to any young college student or high school student considering medical school. The author gives advice on what actions a student can take to maximize their med school application’s attraction to an admissions officer. This guide will encourage any prospective student to laser in on exactly on what medical schools want to see, without being “distracted” by other parts of a college experience. In addition to advice on what type of college might be best, what type of classes to take, the book also gives good insight into what extracurriculars the student should spend their time on; what would be most helpful in putting down on your application’s personal statement and what could be helpful to talk about in your interviews. This book is really for kids early on in their academic careers.

UPDATE: I applied to 13 medical schools. I got interview invitations to 11 of the 13 and accepted at all of the schools I scheduled interviews with. After reading Dr. Goldberg's book I felt that I had a better understanding about the process of going through medical school and applying for a residency. As students, we receive a ton of advice from either senior students or alumni, but this book provides detailed information of what to expect as we progress in our careers. The most influential aspect of his book was the section about how prospective students need to tackle the interview process. We are only given a small window to make a good impression on residency directors and this books provides various methods to not only answer the question presented, but help you stand out as a candidate. I would recommend this book to any student thinking about going into the medical profession and the earlier one reads it the more informed that person will be in his or her decision.

This book is worth it's weight in Gold. (A nudge to Dr. Goldberg, the author, who obviously has great insight into the admissions process in this field.)Oftentimes, books of this nature come off as almost lecture-like. While reading this, I felt I got an insider's view of what it takes to not only apply for, but also to prepare for life as a med student. You will find clear cut examples of how the interview process goes, with tips on what will get you an edge on the competition.Reading this book gave me a sense of what I should put an emphasis on, and also what to omit from my personal statement. This volume reprints all the stories that were in Weird Tales from 1926 to 1928, starting with the first story, "The Horror on the Links."This is a handsome volume, well done. The tales of the supernatural Sherlock Holmes, as he was called, are pretty good, and ran right up until almost the end of the magazine, in the early 1950s. De Grandin fought everything from vampires, ghosts and demons to mummies and killer cults.One odd credit on the copyright page is the claim that stories are by permission of “Weird Tales Limited,” but they are in fact public domain. The copyright was never renewed on most issues of Weird Tales, which folded in 1954. It also says “The Horror on the Links” is copyright Quinn’s estate. That may mean it’s the revised version from "The Phantom Fighter" collection of 1966, in which Quinn modernized the stories collected. Quinn died in 1969.A worth addition to any library of pulp fiction.

Seabury Quinn was a mortician who wrote in his spare time. As it happened, he was the most popular writer in the annals of "Weird Tales" His name on the cover could boost sales tremendously. His Mist popular creation were doctors turned detectives Towbridge and Jules de Grandin. Overwritten but entertaining, these stories were the "X-Files" of their day. Were-gorillas, disembodied spirits, exotic life forms, ancient curses, all these and more were fodder for Quinn whose writing abilities never quite matched his imagination. I took off a star because Quinn's wooden style has not aged well. There is a reason why he faded into obscurity while Robert E Howard, August Derlieth, and H. P. Lovecraft became MORE famous as time progressed. Once you learn the ins and outs of Quinn's quite idiosyncratic style, he becomes much more fun to read. Your milage may vary.

Dr. Trowbridge and Grandin travel widely, and some of their adventures occur in other countries.Across these 22 stories our heroic duo battles demons, ghosts, vampires, and such creatures. There is almost always a lovely woman who is in danger of losing both body and soul.Jules de Grandin, much like Sherlock Holmes has supreme faith in his own abilities and knowledge. He comes across as pompous and self-promoting. He has little use for those who cannot see what he sees. He is often short with Dr. Trowbridge to the point of insult, as Holmes was with Dr. Watson. In the end, he will always return to his friendship with Trowbridge and give an explanation of his thought process and how he succeeded in saving the day.In these first 22 stories, I give Best in Book to “The Gods of East and West.” The story I liked the least was “The Dead Hand.”Fans of Holmes, Carnacki the Ghost Finder, John the Balladeer, John Thunstone, etc should be able to enjoy these tales with much delight! If you've read typical letters from H. P. Lovecraft discussing the contents of the latest issues of WEIRD TALES, you know his mentions of the short stories of Seabury Quinn are generally accompanied by deep groans. Quinn typically placed around 6 stories per year in the monthly WEIRD. The stories feature the adventures of a Hercule Poirot clone, Jules de Grandin, as related by a dimwitted physician sidekick. The introduction to the first volume of the projected 5-volume collection of these tales gives some good advice... let several weeks go by between stories. [My recommendation is to read another, unrelated book between stories.]De Grandin specializes in the occult, the weird, the supernatural and the fantastic. Coming up with a new supernatural menace roughly every two months for 25 years and over 90 stories meant, of course, a good deal of repeated plowing of the same furrows. Sometimes Quinn finds a nice twist, as in the very first published story, where the reader will assume from the beginning that a mad doctor has invented a serum that transforms a nice young man into a murderous gorilla whenever the moon is full. Wrong!If you want to get the full benefit of these attractively printed and bound volumes, you will need some patience and some tolerance, because we are definitely skirting the boundaries of the kingdom of Hack. And more than sometimes, crossing that border.

This book is a good introduction to Dr Jules Di Grandin, the occult detective created by Seabury Quinn in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920's. Quinn was a great author who knew how to tell a story and he was prolific as well turning out a lot of material for a long time. You will notice that there are similarities between Di Grandin and his chronicler, Dr Trowbridge, and Sherlock Holmes &Dr Watson. Don't let that put you off because the differences between them are just as many. The emphasis is on the supernatural and the dark arts and demons of the occult and Di Grandin's ability and knowledge to combat the menace. These are entertaining pulp stories that are written well above some of the dreck that filled pulps during the heyday of the 1930's and '40s.

I've played Traveller for literally decades, off and on, and was eager to see the updates Mongoose had come up with. I'm very impressed, and am planning to incorporate it into a Traveller campaign of my own.This version expands upon the strictly military career paths in Classic Traveller [CT], giving options such as Entertainer, Nobility (available in a CT supplement), Scientist and others, giving characters the opportunity to play anything they might want to. One of my pet peeves when making up a character in CT was the chance your character might die in the middle of the creation process. This is kept in this version, but as the "Ironman" option. Usually, if your character fails the survival roll, they leave their service, and suffer some form of injury, possibly having medical bills to resolve when they muster out. This is very similar to a number of house rules I've seen in play.Skills acquisition and usage are better, also. All characters in a given service have the basic skills needed to do their job at Level 0, which is basic familiarity. Any levels above basic give you an additional +1 to succeed. When using a skill, all you need to do is roll 8+ on two six-sided dice. Your *roll* (not the target) is modified by your skill level, target difficulty, circumstances, and so forth. As a result, your rolls, both as player and referee, are much simpler to calculate.Psionics is handled much better than in CT. Basically, if you have a psionic ability at Level 0, you can use any of the powers within that ability, subject to psionic strength. If you later gain additional levels in that discipline, it becomes a positive modifier to your roll to use psionics. The troublesome "Special" category is referred to mainly as a plot device, relieving referees of the difficulty of either making something up or hunting down obscure or non-canon references.The only problem I had with this version is the type. This is the pocket edition, but they left everything laid out the same, only smaller. Some of the ship floor plans are very hard to read without a magnifying glass, though in decent light the rest is easy to read.Overall, this is an excellent product, and I look forward to my next acquisition in the Mongoose Traveller universe.

This is an excellent update of Classic Traveller. Both the mechanics and the future technologies have been improved to reflect current Sci-Fi RPG concepts. Also, this version is half the price of the hardback.Character generation is basically the same, but has been simplified and more careers added. There is a standard task check system (characteristic modifier + skill level + situational modifiers + 2d6 >= 8 for success) that applies to everything.More future technologies, such as implants, smaller/better computers, and customizable weapons have been added as well. (In the original game, all computers were mainframes-PC's had barely appeared in real life at the time.)This edition assumes a Third Imperium setting, and includes some Third Imperium aliens. However, this can be disregarded with no great loss. Also, Mongoose has published a Traveller setting that uses the Hammer's Slammers background Hammer's Slammers (Traveller Sci-Fi Roleplaying).The type is a bit small, but readable (I'm old enough that I need reading glasses anyway, so it does not matter to me). Some of the deck plans end up rather small and a bit fuzzy as well--this is the only issue I've found.Overall, excellent work and it will probably get me back into Traveller after a 25 year hiatus.

This book leaves a lot to be desired. For example, ammo prices were left off for most of the heavy weapons. Ranks are missing for some of the careers, and the large scale combat rules need more work.Wait for a second printing/edition so these can be updated and this will be a 3 or 4 star product, but not until then.

I was very pleasantly surprised by exactly how well done the Mongoose edition of Traveller is. Using the original (Classic) Traveller rules as a starting point, Gareth Hanrahan and crew have expounded upon and actually improved the game.The largest improvement is the addition of a universal system for task resolution. Although it is a simple mechanic, it is also very effective and leads to quicker resolution of rolls.Character generation has also been greatly improved. The most obvious change to this is the addition of new non-military careers and specialties within careers. The process has also been streamlined by adding the aforementioned task resolution for many of the rolls. The end result of char gen seems to be a character who is more detailed and a bit more "alive" than in Classic Traveller.Despite the changes and additions, this rules set maintains the straight-forwardness and over-all "feel" of Classic. Experienced gamers who have never played Traveller before could pick it up within a few minutes. Newcomers to role-playing will find it a bit more difficult, but could be playing within a day.The Pocket Guide edition has greatly improved layout and graphics over the hardback Core Rules, and includes everything from the larger edition. It also fixes the errors which are present in early printings of the hardcover. The small form factor will feel familiar and comforting to old-school Classic Traveller players.The best news for die-hard Classic Traveller players is that any old adventures or campaigns you might want to play with the new, improved rules would be nearly 100% compatible (and possibly even more enjoyable).Highly recommended for players both old and new.
