Excellent overview of demonic battles encountered by many souls, including mystics. Highly recommended if you need answers to fix a spiritual problem that is not easily understood or dealt with.
The book is alright...nothing bad but nothing new either. Everything in here has been said before and (IMHO) in a better way by others. Appendices are the most useful part. One thing that is frustrating is that Fr. Carlin, like many others, treats the imprecatory prayer as something unimaginable and dangerous. True, one should never confront the devil on his own power, but, historically, every Christian was seen to hold the right of exorcism in Jesus' name. At this point in history, non-exorcists are not to use the imprecatory form AS DIRECTED BY CHURCH DISCIPLINE, but it is not such that it could not be otherwise. If the Church were to change the discipline tomorrow, it could do so. Fr. Amorth stated in his post-mortem book that he believes all priests should hold the power of exorcism. A good step it seems...but we won't likely get there when we perpetuate unnecessary fear and confusion.
This book is solid on doctrine, but it is a bit verbose, and does not say anything that a reasonably well-informed Catholic would not already know or simply intuit.
Sans sensationalism, the author uses his experience and the teachings and prayers of the Church and the Saints to guide laity as well as priests in discernment, action and ultimately holiness.
