I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this book for review. In all of my years working in film, this is one that I wish I had from the beginning. The book uses clear, easy-to-follow 3D diagrams of scene setups from famous movies along with step-by-step instructions for how to accomplish the same types of complex scenes you would see in a major Hollywood studio film. It really is just like learning all of the magician's tricks in one book. I heartily recommend it for anyone in film. There's enough in there that even the most seasoned professional might pick up something new.
Master shots is an INCREDIBLE book for a beginner / intermediate filmmaker. It does not spend any time going on and on about the history and reasoning for doing this or that. It just starts page 1 – to do this effect put the camera here, put the actors there, move the camera this way, change the focus in this way as you do it. The explanation for each scene that it goes into is two or three pages long. Then it starts the next scene example. The camera here, the actors there... Sometimes a snippet of the psychology behind doing something a certain way.Professional / advanced filmmakers maybe would not get a lot out of this because this is probably things they already know or already do. But if you have a little bit of time to read, it would be worth it for them because they may pick up some little idea in here that works out great for them. I'm a beginner level but just reading the book stirred some ideas in my mind that were not even given in the book. So for this reason they may also like it. The intro to the book suggested this as well and it was right.
Realky great for active filmmakers. When you need to communicate something with pictures this book is good for thumbing through to show crew what kind of shot you are after.
For the beginner or occasional filmmaker, this is a great book. Essentially it is an encyclopedia of master shots, a hundred of them. Most are illustrated with stills from various films and with 3D models created in Poser 7. The author provides details about how the shot is set up, the feeling the shot is intended to convey and pertinent information. Kenworthy deliberately stays away from things like lenses, equipment, lighting and so on. His point is that the shots can be accomplished with any kind of camera. It is the point of view that matters and the action that establishes the meaning of the shot and advances the story. Master Shots is definitely an aid to the beginning filmmaker or those who shoot only occasionally and could you a bit of assistance in visualizing how to tell their story. For a very reasonable cost, you have a hundred classic master shots diagrammed and explained for you. Good deal.Jerry
Not meant to replace experience in the field, nor a good imagination and eye, this book does simplify and codify the classic shots that need to be in your repertoire. It's an amazing time saver for fostering dialogue between DPs and Directors, and is a great springboard for either making these shots your own, or knowing what you need to avoid.
I was a bit skeptical of the digest format when I bought this, but it's a great little guide to adding some variety to your short productions. It's a well-illustrated book breaking down shots you've seen in film and TV, with practical advice on how to shoot them. It's a very fair price for the advice within, although it doesn't get into much theory, it's straight to the "nuts and bolts" without telling you too much about why you're doing what you're doing. That could be a pro or a con depending on your inclinations. My only reservation is some of the illustrations are from a 3d program such as Poser and I would prefer more actually photography. The "short version:" Very good advice for the price.
Excellent book, killed it. It was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. In the future I will continue this writer, to see what else makes publications. See if you are encouraged to write about real-time grafics, 3d , virtualsets anything..Congrats.Israel D.[...]
