I am very happy with this purchase >PeopleSoft PeopleTools Data Management and Upgrade Handbook (Oracle Press) I recommend it to my family and friends.
The book has a limited selection of articles covering data and upgrade management; although well written, but is very limited to the content, thus also very pricey!!!
Nice review and clear
Ok
The book came very quickly was in the shape that it said it was in. Very pleased with the order.
I was looking for information on creating custom change packages and this fit the bill.Lot's of other useful info you can't get easily from Peoplebooks.Paula Dean is an excellent instructor & it comes clearly through in this book.
This book offers an excellent review of all the Peopletools available utilities.I won't enumerate all of them here, some are well known and very much used (for instance AppDesigner and DataMover), some of them much less like Archival Data Manager, or Test Framework. All utilities are very well explained for a most optimal use in a project perspective. That's definitely a book to have on each and every project, maintenance project as well as development, and who ever you are on the project...You are a new comer in Peoplesoft world ? This book is definitely for you, nothing better for an introduction than the given enumeration of each utility, what's the use of them, how to use them. You are a developer ? This book is definitely for you, it will certainly shows some aspect and use of utilities that you did not think of, or work on yet, or more simply remember you things you forgot. I like very much the two aspects explained for each tool, maintenance and development. You are an administrator ? This book is definitely for you, I'm pretty sure you will learn a lot and probably will want to change some of your scripts and behavior during the live of a project according to the given explanation, or will understand some aspect and demand of your developers. There's a lot of easy and simple reproductible examples with their screenshots.Note that the whole book's examples are built based on Peoplesoft OVM. It would have been nice to have a little bit more introduction even though we can find some explanations on page 307 (probably better to have this earlier in the book). For people newly coming in Peoplesoft world, it could be a bit difficult to follow some aspect without knowing the author, and his background. Saying that, this book assumes you know Jim and his nice "Jim's PeopleSoft Journal" blog, I think the book must be combined with the blog. Anyway, it shows pretty well how we can easily test each and every utilities without much effort. One could argue the book could have been more detailed and a bit more complex examples, that's right, but then it would multiply the number of pages.I like very much the human readable size of the book (about 300 pages) and the style, easy to read.Peoplesoft is a quite complex world, a lot of components are playing their own game in the all picture. Whether the database is the core for data store, the Peopletools utilities are the core of Peoplesoft environment management, and this is widely covered by this book.Lastly, for the professional use of the book on a project, the book is rather cheap. You should have more than one to share even more with colleagues.Have a good reading, and nice experiences.Nicolas.gasparotto.blogspot.com
The 'Data Management and Upgrade Handbook' fills a large gap in the PeopleSoft book marketplace. We have Jim's first book which caters for genuine hard-core PeopleCode developers. We also have David Kurtz's book which caters for DBAs. For a long time we've been missing a book for those of us that sit in between, maybe we do some development, but we also perform some system administration activities too (like migrating code between environments, using data mover, applying the odd patch or bundle etc). This book is aimed squarely at these 'DevOps' staff - and there are a lot of us.In the first part of the book (Data and Change Management) Jim and Paula take us methodically through each of the tools that you're going to need to use as part of your day job (like Change Assistant and Data Mover) and introduces those that you might not 'have' to use, but should make your life easier (like Data Archive Manager and Version Control). In the second part (Upgrades) they walk us through a typical upgrade, covering the factors that govern the time and manpower required, through project teams and activities, and onto the tools that smooth the process (like PeopleSoft Test Framework and automated test suites). It's just over 300 pages, so it's short enough to read through cover-to-cover when you're trying to upskill someone with a few years experience, but it's also detailed enough to keep around as a reference manual. There's not a single customer that couldn't benefit from having a copy or two of this in the project office.
