There is some interesting information here, but also a lot of confusing recommendations to download a lot of programs to facilitate your process. For me, using Scrivener is the most useful "tool" a writer can use. I'd skip this book. For less than the cost of the stuff he recommends to download and use, Scrivener is only $40. The 3 stars is more for his philosophy of "getting to work, stop worrying about all the stuff AFTER writing your book." Write first...always good advice.
I read several books lately about how to write and self publish a book. So I bought this book out of curiosity - what else can I learn? I must say this book made me think. I always want to know all about the topic I'm passionate about therefore I study a lot of materials, read many books, take courses and so on. This book eliminate all the fears about complexity and reduce the overall overwhelm. So it's a great way to start and then, once you publish your first book, go and study details in depth. So I recommend this book to all thinking about writing your own book or those that are stuck with their book for whatever reason.
If you like long books because they're long, then this resource make not be for you. But if you're like me, and you like books that get straight to the point, then this book is for you, too.It's only 10,000 words and less than 100 pages. But the author goes through exactly what you need to learn about KDP without me having to go back and forth to Amazon to search for the answer.I particularly liked his first section of the book on creating the right mindset to finish writing and publish a book. One thing I "suffer" from is what the author calls impostor syndrome. His honest insight and steps to overcome this mindset are what I value most in this quick.I've written a book before, but I was able to find new approaches to writing for kindle that I didn't know before. I recommend this book.
Ray Brehm has written an encouraging book for first time authors (like me)! Writing came easy but the thought of getting reviews, persuading people to buy the book for low cost and leave positive reviews, get known by loads and loads of people was daunting. I found myself slowing down just at the thought of all of this.But in this book Ray Brehm told me that I should just get my book published. I should prepare it for Kindle and then upload it to Amazon, and save it as a draft or a preorder then hit the orange button. There! A publication is born.All of the other stuff can come later. I suspect that it will be easier to ask people to review and get excited about an actually published book than a possible book. I will find it easier to get on social media and writing groups and talk about my book after it is published than before it is published.This is a good book with specific links and instructions. Simple, clear, and helpful. Buy this book.
This book was a fast read and full of answers to questions I had like, "Hey his cover looks great. I wonder how he found a book cover artist." Explained. In detail.In fact, I think I skipped to that chapter (chapter 14 - Book Cover) right from his well laid-out table of contents, but then I couldn't help but go back and read the whole book.I loved that it had great antidotes without ruining the goal of getting the info I wanted quickly.Super job. I was perhaps most helped by Brehm's tip that went something like, "Trust me, your first book does not have to be a best seller. It's important to just get that first book up on Amazon."Duly noted. I've taken books I've written off of Amazon over the years without making them better and uploading them so this was a great point. He also had tips to go ahead and run a best seller campaign if that's your goal.
I gave this book 5 stars for a couple of reasons and rated it within the context of what it is--a quick read, not a full-length book. Ray does a great job of conveying the point that you need to get started on what is important first and worry about the details later. This is true--a lot of writers (or anyone in business, for that matter), spend too much time on small details that won't increase their paychecks. This book--compared to several others I've read on writing and publishing for beginners--keeps you moving in the right direction with small steps. If you're looking for a book that tells you every detail you need to know from A-Z, this isn't it, and I don't think it was written to be that kind of book.
I wish I had not wasted my money or time.The majority of this thin book is wasted typeface busily shouting about why one should follow the author's method. I enjoyed it about as much as my last conversation with a used-car salesman.I refer to it as "thin" because there's not much meat on this skeleton.Saver your money and your 90 minutes required to read this.
