This book started off fairly slow and stuffy but I am so glad that I stuck with it. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns. The main characters are sweet yet complex. It was not predicable at all and kept me surprised up until the end. The romance was sweet yet not all about lust and sex which was a refreshing change from many books on the market today. You could get to know the characters without them always being naked. I would highly suggest this book to anyone looking for a sweet love story set in historical times. It was very well written.

This book captures the feel of old Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills, in a sweet, though sometimes predictable, romance. Written as the memoir of an elderly woman to be found by her descendants, the story relates the trials she suffered as an eighteen-year-old Highland girl sent to Edinburgh to find a suitable husband in 1811.All of the action takes place in a relatively short span of time and reads like a novella. I would have liked to have seen it as a longer book just to have held onto these delicious characters a little longer. In the style of good-old fashioned romance, the author, Helen Susan Swift, alluded to her characters' desires, but avoids explicit sex scenes that can turn romance into erotica.Hopefully Swift will carry on with the lives of her characters and we can enjoy the way she paints this era of Scottish history.

This was a lovely story to read, it was well-written and I could not put it down. However, I did find the ending a little disappointing. It was kind of like all the adventure fell flat.It was kind of like the author ran out of ideas on how to end the story. I really enjoyed the beginning & middle, the end was okay (not terrible but not as good as the rest of the book).I would read another book by Helen Susan Swift, as she has a lovely writing style.

This is written as a story told by an elderly woman . Normally I don't stay with This type of writing. It was will written and just enough story to keep me reading. The twist at the end was predictable but a cute easy read. Goes fast, is simple plot so if you want a quick amusing story, go for it.

Story is about elderly woman's memoirs as to how she met and married her husband. Story is written in proper English and is slow reading. Story is drawn out and kind of boring.

Was it old Edinburgh, or the mysterious Mr. Kemp, the descriptive cat fight where you could almost feel the slap, the shepherd 's cottage, or the sea adventure that drew me? Perhaps it was the old gypsy woman's hand fasting ceremony on top of the windswept cairn that made me wish I could be bound to the story forever. It was a wee bit more bawdy than my eyes usually see, but the author had me blushing, laughing or at least smiling the whole way along.

I just loved the aspect of a older storyteller imparting wisdom in guise of her own learn wisdom. Who's giving her listeners advise all the while telling such a wonderful tale of a very young lady who's sent into society by way of persons who can help her circumvent the way to finding a suitable prospect . What joy to read. And a fun adventure to love.

I didn’t care for the book very much. I only finished it because it wasn’t long and in my review I wanted to say that it drove me crazy that whoever edited this book does NOT know how to spell JUDGMENT!!! Not once was it spelled correctly. Also the story was told by an old woman who kept inserting comments directly to the reader. Not my preference at all!
