I'm 51; there was no Asperger Syndrome diagnosis when I was a kid. I stumbled across a description and it sounded too familiar. This book has helped me more than I could have imagined. I didn't know that there were so many social rules that I didn't know. It is written for adolescents, in a quick, simple, matter-of-fact style. You could read the whole book in one afternoon, but I recommend 1 short chapter at a time, to give yourself time to absorb the info and think about how it applies to your life. (Sheldon Cooper of the Big Bang Theory, is an extreme Aspie. I'm more like Lenard Hofstadter.) I highly recommend this book for anyone who feels slightly socially awkward.
The first 40 pages is something my 10 year old and myself go back to over and over, reciting some of it like mantra. I wish I had found the book sooner. No, my 10 year old ASD child does not want to read the book, in fact he hates reading. But he never reads a set (a set is 10-15 pages for us predetermined when opening it that day) without saying "Ok, yeah, I can get that mom. I can see how this is true. I will try this." I like that it specifically spells out NT don't think like or understand you exactly the way you don't think like or understand them. And we won't always agree, but we must find common ground somehow through compromise or altering bahvaiors and if not there is consequences, not necessarily punishments, but conseequences.
Of all the books about Asperger's that I own, this is the only one with "how to" information for the child. I bought this book a couple of months ago for my 11 year old son who has Asperger's. We read one chapter together each night and both learn from it. We even reference it when he comes home from school after a "bad day" and look up how he could have handled the situation differently. I would recommend this book to any one who has an asperger child in the pre-teen to tween age.
I am an adult with Aspergers and this book is very helpful! It is packed full of information that I wish I had known as a teenager, but the info can definitely be applied to my adult life. I highly recommend this book!
Fantastic book! This book is on point with most of the experiences and difficulties that a Aspie kid goes through. Explains Neuro-typical actions with Aspie-logic. I bought this book to help my son understand social situations and help explain other people's actions towards him. I highly recommend this book even for adults with Aspergers because they will be going through most of the same situations.
This was a great book for my son diagnosed with Aspergers. He didn't get a diagnosis until age 10. The year prior to the diagnosis and other years prior he struggled with friendships and feeling bullied and left out. He read this book over the summer and gained insight into his struggles that gave him confidence to approach this year differently. He's getting new responses from kids and is able to recognize when he is not using pro social behavior.
I am myself autistic, but I bought this book for my younger cousin who is in her first year of high school. Out of all the books I could find, this one had the most practical information written in an age-appropriate way for a kid in the middle school to high school range. It is written to explain basic rules for kids who really struggle understanding social conventions. A few topics probably require further discussion (for example, the author claims that it is a social rule for children to not question adults, which I disagree with), but it is overall accurate, and a good basic "primer". All of the topics are explained in a way that I, as an autistic adult with relatively good social skills, find accurate. The author also did a good job of selecting which topics kids are likely to struggle with. My cousin apparently found it fascinating, and was running back and forth all day checking with her mom as she read about a new social convention that she had never realized was important. This book is probably best for kids in at least middle school, with solid reading skills. It is also probably going to be best for kids who have a lot of trouble understanding *why* social rules are important. The author has another book written specifically for autistic girls, but from reading the preview it seems to be aimed at older and/or more mature teenagers than this one is. I am happy with my purchase, and out of many books I have read, this is definitely one of the better ones intended FOR autistic children and teens. It definitely helps that the author has Aspergers herself!
If you have a tween or teen on the spectrum who is dealing with social exchanges, feeling awkward in social situations, or reciprocal conversation, this book will help them understand that they are not 'Broken'. I am currently reading this with my son and it is deeply resonating with him. The language is not clinical or condescending, it is relatable and written from the viewpoint of someone who 'gets it' as she has dealt with similar issues all of her life. Thank you for this guide and helping my son to see that he simply processess differently than Neurotypical people. It is very validating for him.
