About the Author

Nick Hughes is a former French Foreign Legionnaire, bodyguard to the rich and famous and martial arts instructor. He holds black belt status in several styles of Karate, Aikido, Judo, Ju-jutsu as well as ranks in military unarmed combat and filipino martial arts. He has both boxed and kick-boxed professionally and competed in Judo competition internationally. As a bouncer in some very rough clubs, and a military police officer in the Legion, he learned first hand what martial art techniques worked and which ones didn't. That puts him in a unique position compared to a lot of instructors who are teaching what amounts to theory. Wanting to move up in the security world he decided to pursue a career in diplomatic security and quickly found out a background in Special Forces was going to be an asset. With that in mind he joined the French Foreign Legion as both a para-commando and military police officer. After leaving the Legion he worked for various agencies all over the world looking after clients such as members of the Saudi Royal Family, VIPs, businessmen and rock stars. During that time he began writing for Fighting Arts International about practical martial arts and teaching on various bodyguard training courses. He appeared on Spike TV's "Deadliest Warrior" in the series penultimate episode about the French Foreign Legion versus the Gurkha. He popped up on Paladin Press' radar and filmed a series of instructional DVDs and began working on his 2nd book on self defense. He has also produced an app called I-bodyguard which is the salient points from his book which is available on both I-phone and Android. He is now on a quest to train half a million people in self-defense before casting off his mortal coil and teaches Warriors Krav Maga out of NC and various affiliate schools. He's also currently working on books about his time in the Legion, Hard Skills, Goal Setting and adventures from his security days.

So the book, How To Be Your Own Bodyguard. Short review, go buy it. Doesn't matter what art you study, or if you don't even study martial arts. Your mindset will change after this book, and if you put into practice even half of what Hughes recommends, you will be safer.Now this is admittedly a self published book. It does have a few errors in it, which are easily over looked. The most glaring flaw, is that later in the book it makes mention of there being a previous edition, but there is no indication on the cover nor the title page, what edition it is.At the beginning, Hughes spends a fair amount of time discussing mind set, looking at the differences between actual self defense, defense of self, and sport fighting. With a couple of war stories mixed in, of being a body guard and defending himself from multiple attackers.He also discussed the mental preparation states, DEFCON levels for personal protection.The chapters are kept short and tight, Hughes doesn't waste words, with each chapter being only a couple of pages on the average 3 or 4 pages. At 304 Pages, including the index and biography of the author, it's a lot of information.Hughes goes into just enough detail about how the fights work, how adrenaline affects you and the OODA loop, without boring you.After moving out of fight theory, we get to actual more meat, such as safety tips for being at the ATM, Taxi, Public transport, and clubs / restaurants. As well as home security tips and much more.Towards the end, Hughes goes over the commonly found martial arts, with a reasonable and objective list of pros and cons for each. Doesn't claim his art is the best, which is refreshing. And then discusses how to find a good instructor for your chosen style.He includes a home safety checklists at the end, which is useful and constructive, I find myself wishing he had included more, covering the other locations he had previously discussed in the book.Hughes was considerate enough to includes an index, which is really helpful when you want to find something on a particular subject or topic in the book really fast.Finally of course is the biography, which covers Hughes extensive martial arts and military training. Over all, this book belongs on your shelf, and not just collecting dust. It should be referenced several times a year, if for no other reason than to keep the information fresh in your mind so you can protect your family.

I am a regional disaster preparedness officer for a multinational corporation. This is the best book on personal security and general disaster preparedness I have ever read...and I have a library of such books.

Mr. Hughes's 304-page book should be required reading for anyone wishing to be, or already is, in the security field. He has walked the walk, but he has the important additional talent to logically lay out what he wanted to say, and wrote the word-picture to help the reader visualize his narrative. Mechanically, the margin and line-spacing guaranteed smooth reading.I was also impressed with the number of examples that would help the reader. For example (of his example), the reasons for not falling asleep on public transport, and examples of what can happen if one leaves an adult beverage unattended.It is my pleasure to recommend this book and to submit a rare 5-star, the first one this year.RossiThis review was about Mr. Hughes and his book, not me. But to add minor credence to the review, I might comment I was a infantry Marine jungle combat veteran, an instructor in small unit tactics along with saboteur and civil unrest instruction to insurgents in unnamed Central American countries. And.... currently in the security field.You asked for suggestions for the book's next edition. I would suggest the Left Of Bang program.

I've done a lot of reality based combat training which is great if I get in trouble. This book does an excellent job describing how to stay out of trouble situations so I don't have to resort to either receiving or giving violence. This author ranks right up there with Marc McYoung and Rory McDonald. You cannot go wrong with any of these three authors. You'll find pearls of wisdom in any of their books. This book is excellent and should be read by anyone who want to protect themselves from predatory bad guys. As a side note, this is a self published book and it is written and edited as well as any book from a major publishing company.

Follow his guidance and learn to become more aware of your surroundings, and better able to deal with and handle situations of all kinds. This book is an easy to read, understandable and concise explanation of threat analysis, assessment and avoidance techniques used by military, security and law enforcement that are applicable to everyday use without the need for unnecessary and counter productive paranoia. Nick explains in detail how small, incremental changes in your normal routine can substantially increase the safety and well being of yourself, your family and your environment. Nick's extensive background in a wide variety of military, civilian and corporate high threat situations ensures he speaks from experience, unlike many quasi experts most of us have encountered. I also advise you watch the video clip of Nick's Deadliest Warrior Spike TV show from September 2011, season 3, episode 9.

This is one of the best compilations of good defense advice I've read (and this is one of my favorite reading topics). There is a lot of valuable information, presented in a clear easy-to-read style. The author obviously knows his subject inside-out. But he manages to make it accessible to average non-expert readers. He covers a wide range of issues, making this a good all-in-one reference. It's also a great thought-starter leading to deeper study of specific topics. I especially appreciate the emphasis on all-around self Protection in contrast to fighting-only self Defense. This one will stay in my Favorites list!
